Double storey Victorian home in a coveted northside locale
Owners Notes
This home is a special place for us having safely housed three generations of our family.
It started its life in the Victorian era as a shop front (being at one time a butcher’s) and all the beautiful period features are original. Dad purchased it 45 years ago, enlisting the help of trailblazing Fitzroy architect Suzanne Dance to turn the place into a unique and character-filled family home. Dance’s work is iconic in the area and her design at 129 Miller Street had a photo spread in Women’s Day in 1980. It remains a quintessential North Fitzroy pad!
The quality of the design and building materials are evident in how well the renovation and larger house have stood the test of time. It has been lovingly and skilfully maintained over the decades without any major problems.
In summer, the double brick keeps us cool inside for days and the underfloor heating works like magic in the winter. Our favourite part of the property is the long, leafy garden. We’ve hosted countless barbecues, lunches, parties and dinners on the grass under the trees. It’s like a little green paradise in the inner city. The fruit trees attract all kinds of birds, including rainbow lorikeets and galahs.
We have outgrown the property but making the decision to sell hasn’t been easy, not least because of the wonderfully caring community of neighbours in Miller Street and surrounding streets.
On weekends, kids run about in a happy crew from one house to the next. We even have a gate in the fence to next door, so they can move freely between. We spend a lot of time socialising with neighbours and there’s always a friendly face on the street. We’re never short of someone to bring in the bins, lend a wheelbarrow or feed the cat, if help is needed.
Our family also hangs out regularly at the cafe on the corner, Mary Miller. We are there so often, it’s like a second living room! There’s so much life to Miller Street and the location is really idyllic with the primary school a block away and Northcote High around the corner.
We love to walk our dog or cycle along the Merri Creek, sometimes dropping in at Ceres to see the chooks or doing a lap of the Brunswick Velodrome. There are also many playgrounds nearby to choose from.
There are loads of safe cycling trails and public transport is in abundance.
