Award-winning design, soaring spaces

This theatrically conceived warehouse conversion was commended for a Victorian Architectural Award for innovative design after its completion in 1995. The residence - built as a corrugated iron-clad three storey 'block' within the towering shell of a former factory - is as striking today as it was then and is surely one of the most spacious city-fringe conversions of its kind.
A security lobby at one side of the unadorned faade leads into the vast atrium garden and courtyard which wraps around three sides of the house. Towering more than three storeys, it is partly covered, partly planted with tropical vegetation. An intriguing 'indoor-outdoor' effect is achieved by facing all of the major rooms into the atrium, which in turn opens to the outdoors through window spaces set high on the walls. The living and dining area, floored in black concrete and soaring skyward to a long Perspex barrel skylight, is truly spectacular. With double doors to the courtyard, it offers grand-scale entertaining space, surmounted by an assembly of chains and pulleys, a reminder of the building's industrial ancestry. A stylish timber kitchen is set off to one side, along with a full-size laundry and a powder room. A large secluded terrace is set one level higher. Timber stairs angle up from the entry to a long gallery-style space with cut-out walls looking down over the living area. Two very large bedrooms, both with walls of built-in wardrobes, are separated by twin bathrooms walled in opaque glass and brushed stainless steel. A third bedroom with skyline views is set one level higher, leading up to dramatic living eyrie looking down into the centre of the house: stairs lead to two balconies, giving magnificent prospects to the city and the eastern hills.
Secure garaging is provided from a right of way at the rear, and there is potential garaging from the main street frontage. With generous storage space and imaginative glass and industrial finishes, this unique property is within a short stroll of the Victoria Market, parks and the cafes of Errol Street.
