Owners Notes
My parents bought 177 Canning Street in 1980. So it’s been in our family 42 years. They bought it for me to live in while I was a student at Melbourne Uni. I have a lot of fond memories of Carlton from that time. A review I saw recently said it well, "In the 1980s, Lygon Street was all hustle and bustle, it was the epicentre of Melbourne.” As young uni students revelled in late night movies at The Carlton Bughouse and lazy afternoons sipping dry and dry’s at Jimmy Watsons. Many of the old favourites, including Jimmy Watson’s and the iconic Ti Amo’s can still be enjoyed by today’s Carlton residents, together with new delights like Brunetti’s and The Nova for movies.
I particularly appreciated the five minute walk around the corner for a swim at the Carlton Baths and a stroll just five minutes further up to Rathdowne Village with its little shops and cafes. My first job was waitressing at the historic Porchetta’s! Today when I am in Rathdowne Village I still a enjoy a meal at The Kent Hotel.
I loved living at 177 Canning Street. This part of the street is particularly quiet. There was very little traffic in my time there and even less today with some of the great streetscape improvements. This makes for a peaceful place to live which is pretty amazing really this close to the Melbourne CBD! The unique bluestone façade of 177 I always adored. I still don’t know of another bluestone façade in the area which is tuckpointed. The lovely, chocolate and dark grey slates of the roof give 177 Canning such rare authentic feel too. Again, very few places in the area still have their slate rooves. The fireplace gives the front bedroom a cosy ambience and I always loved the subtle ‘bay window’ touch in that room too. I adore a house full of natural light but that can be difficult to find in Carlton terraces. Again, this house has abundant natural light in every room.
The garden was always a little sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of the inner city. Although I will admit to one rare lapse of reason - a cocktail party with 50 people in that garden! Wasn’t the brightest idea I ever had. But hey, I was young and cocktail parties were ‘all the rage’ in the eighties! After I moved on, the house stayed in our family until the present. My parents kept it in case my brother and I might like to live in the area again but each of us eventually moved out of the inner city when we had families. So my parents did a renovation to create the current, modern open-plan kitchen/dining/lounge area and turned it over to tenancy. After one or two initial tenants, a lovely, single, professional woman working in the medical industry made it her own home for 30 years! It was truly loved and lovingly maintained over that time. With dear Natasha moving out, my family has decided it is time to let someone new enjoy the special charm of 177 Canning Street.
