Owners Notes

For 24 years this home has given my family brilliant access to inner-city life – and a retreat from it! When we arrived, two children were at Melbourne Uni. and later worked nearby; this neighbourhood made their social life easy and I quickly made close friends in the community.

It’s quick tram ride to theatres, concerts and sports venues and I make impulse visits to the NGV and Exhibition Centre. We’ve enjoyed live music and comedy, at Errol Street or the Meat Market Hub, and eaten at lots of good local restaurants and pubs. The great joy is Royal Park, where we’ve walked regularly with family dogs and picnicked in the Native Gardens. With two active grandsons, I valued the Adventure Playground (near the Children’s Hospital – just in case!) and easy access to the Zoo and Museum.

I love the flexibility of the house. The front room accommodated two beds, and a cot, before my books moved in. The bungalow, with ensuite and access via the side gate, has been a great guest room and one daughter ran a business from it. When her family of 4 stayed for months, the sitting- room converted easily to a bedroom. It’s been great for parties, with the two double doors connecting to the garden and the laundry set up as a 2nd kitchen.

My favourite features: The view from the front verandah at sunset; the super-sized bath (with virtually free heat pump hot water); the spill-proof stainless steel kitchen bench and the long counter where family prepare food together. Best of all is the “secret” garden. The soil, built without chemicals has grown vegetables and fruit but current planting is no-fuss. It’s a space where I never feel hemmed-in, where friends and family share the long shade in summer and winter sun.

I know 56 Molesworth St will give the next owners as many happy memories as it has given me.
