Owners Notes
Our house at Byrne St has been home to our family for over 18 years. When we first purchased the house we thought we would only be here for a few years, but when we arrived here we realised just what an amazing place this is! We use the park everyday like our ‘front garden’ and the outlook from the house with connection to so much open space on our doorstep has made it feel like we are not living in a compact inner-city home - there is a lot of breathing space here.
We love Fitzroy North and have spent many years exploring local restaurants, cafes and shops. Luckily we are spoilt for choice as we have Fitzroy North Village, Nicholson St, Queens Parade and even Rathdowne St and Northcote High St within walking distance, and we very often wander across to any of these streets for a lazy Sunday breakfast or impromptu dinner. The capital city bike path than runs along the park connects us to so many places. We jump on the bike path and head to the gardens, work, school, shops and the city. Having this on our doorstep means we haven’t needed a second car and can travel with our children to so many places without even having to ride on roads.
Our renovation of Byrne St has been our personal ‘project’ for many years. The two storey addition was completed in 2010. We subsequently upgraded the external cladding of the extension as well as upgrading the interior fit-out and landscaping, which was completed in 2022. This renovation focused on elevating the home to a level akin to our high-end residential projects and added more storage for our growing family.
As architects working in the boutique residential space we value beautiful spaces but also understand that thoughtful design is essential to making a home function well and feel comfortable and welcoming. We love the challenge of making the most out of every space in a compact inner-city terrace house and Byrne St has given us a great opportunity to explore this.
The house features a range of ‘hidden’ features from high thermal and acoustic insulation in all the walls and floors, to concealed sliding doors allowing spaces to be free flowing or used as a series of separate rooms. This flexibility means a compact home can work for different people with different needs and at different stages of life.
Premium quality finishes are used throughout this home as it is important to us that it feels well-crafted and also achieves longevity.
We are very sad to say goodbye to our home in Byrne St but as our children are growing up, we are getting ready to make a new home and embark on our next project!
