Owners Notes
Upon returning to Melbourne after 8 years overseas, we wanted a home that had a point of difference in a bustling, community-focused area. We loved that 16 Newry Street is part of Carlton North’s rich industrial history as a former confectionery factory of S.T. Nunquam. We’ve met long term residents who still recall the smell of peppermint lollies wafting across the surrounding area. The red, triple layered bricks, thick concrete flooring and original roof rafters have been beautifully incorporated into the modern architecture of the building by renowned Nicholas Murray Architects.
It is the vibrancy of the area that we fell in love with – the local shops in Rathdowne Street where we enjoy a morning coffee from Fledgling café, dinner with friends at Gerald’s Bar and the best toasties during the working week at Florian which was recently voted one of Melbourne’s top 20 cafes. Curtain Square is full of laughter in the playgrounds, Thai Chi on Thursday mornings and family gatherings on weekends. We love to take our chairs, books and wine to the park and just enjoy some quiet time there on a sunny afternoon. It is our ‘backyard’ without the hassle of mowing it!
Our Saturday morning walks to the Queen Vic market kept us sane and well fed during the lockdowns and we are spoilt with choice for evening walks along the bike paths to either Merri Creek, Edinburgh Gardens Princes Park and sometimes even the zoo. In fact, we are a one-car family (which we can securely lock away when needed) as we walk to all that we love and need to do. We have both worked comfortably from home the past two years in our separate office areas and often meet for lunch in the atrium, protected from the wind and catching the northly sun.
And at the end of the day? We watch the lights come up over our beautiful city and reflect on another great day in Carlton North.
