How does Melbourne celebrate Halloween?

While it’s certainly an American holiday at heart, there are still plenty of people that love to get into the swing of Halloween here in Melbourne.

Research by McCrindle back in 2012 showed that 26 per cent of Australians planned to celebrate Halloween. While this clearly isn’t a dominating force, one important statistic from the survey does stand out: apparently 51 per cent of respondents with primary school-age kids had Halloween plans.

Melbourne isn’t just a great place to live and raise children, it’s an awesome place to get spooky this Halloween. Here’s a couple of examples to hopefully get you in the scary spirit!

The ghosts of Prime Ministers past

If you live in real estate in Fitzroy, Carlton or anywhere else nearby then you’re practically on the doorstep of one of the city’s best central attractions for Halloween: the Melbourne General Cemetery. Tours of the iconic locale only happen three times a year: late February, a full moon in April or May, and of course the spookiest night of the year, October 31st.

“It’s a great way to get out and about, as well as learn a little more about some of Melbourne’s best suburbs”

You have to book ahead, but the tour introduces you to the all-star cast of the graveyard. This includes Sir Robert Menzies, the explorers Burke and Wills, as well as Frederici Baker, the ghost of Princes Theatre.

It’s a great way to get out and about ,as well as learn a little more about some of Melbourne’s best suburbs and what they contain!

Simply spooktacular

If you’re looking for something a little more fantastical this Halloween, just over in St Kilda is the excellent Spooktober Haunted House. This is an event suitable for kids aged six years and over. Bring your own torches, candles or even glow sticks and explore an eerie mansion to your heart’s content.

This one errs on the side of entertaining rather than scary, although on the same site there is a more extreme thrill ride for those aged 18 and over. No matter how much you want to be scared, Melbourne will have the right event for you!

What spooky delights do Melbourne’s best suburbs have in store?
